78 MINUTES ON SHERWOOD DRIVE
by Eva Knutz (story-concept) & Gabriëlle Marks (graphic design)*
SHERWOOD DRIVE is an interactive, dramatic soap inspired by several formats; the soap-opera,the radio-play and the navigational structure of a game. It is an on-line narrative updated by its own audience and all characters are therefore played by non-actors (see: user input)

The interface of Sherwood Drive is non-figurative. We have chosen abstract images in combination with sound and dialogues, to visualize the dramatic story-line, which takes place at several locations at exactly the same time.

What we made, is a "pilot-edition" for the web (tv) and/or the radio. The "pilot-edition" consists of "5 layers" (5 timeslots in which the drama unfolds on different locations simultaneously). When produced these "layers" could be added up to for example 12 "layers" in order to produce a serial-soap with 12 episodes.

SHERWOOD DRIVE (the pilot) uses the following components:
8 Characters, 5 Locations, 5 timeslots, 3 simultaneous narratives
See flowchart

The story has the following startingpoint:
Mr. Richard has to leave for a business-trip abroad and has asked his brother, uncle John, to look after his two teenage-daughters, Marian and Diane, until the day of his return. Marian is secretly in love with the young man next door, Robert, who´s living alone with his mother, Mrs. Hood.
From the beginning the audience must choose at what location he/she wants to be. For instance: One can choose to stay in the Kitchen with the two sisters Marian and Diane, checkout what Robert is doing in the Greenhouse or follow Mrs. Hood and Mr. Richard, who are in the Car on the way to the airport. Whatever location (and part of the plot) one chooses to be in, something else is taking place at another location at the same time - and the feeling of having missed "something" somewhere else is part of "Sherwood Drive".

*Eva Knutz and Gabriëlle Marks both graduated at the Master of Fine Arts programm of Media-Gn, Groningen. Knutz comes from an autonomous art background, Marks from an applied-arts background. The past few years both have been experimenting with new media in relation to their own respective disciplines. Knutz has developed a keen interest in the art of digital-storytelling, Marks continues to explore the boundaries of interface-design. Language, the voice, and narrative are common elements that have drawn Knutz and Marks into this joint-project. Other works of Eva Knutz and Gabrielle Marks can be seen at: www.9nerds.com
