AFK.0 ij online: AFK.0 uses an hourly updating weathercam in Pincher Creek, a small and remote town in Canada. At noon and 2pm local time three tiny figures appear in the picture, that otherwise shows only a wide and empty snowscape. Their message: WRU [Where Are You] and SPK [Speak]. The next hour they are gone, only some fresh cartracks in the snow are left behind. From my trailer home in California I keep watching and saving images until the end of the short winter day in Canada. What a contrast: I listen to lively noises around me filling the warm afternoon air while watching the live image of this lonely crystal cold landscape far north! |
misha onsite: Three webcams are set up at the local airport in Pincher Creek, Alberta, a small town where I grew up. My collaborator, who is living in a trailor park in southern California, and I have been watching the camera for days. We finally agree on the time for the action. I enlist the support of my father and sister who help stand with the message in front of the camera. My brother and mother watch from the computer at home and call us on the mobile when they have received the message. The morning of the event, there is so much frost that the entire landscape, plowed fields, power lines, windmills, are covered with a thick coat of white. It is cold and quiet. It feels good being out there. As we hold up the bright pink-lettered signs, somebody from the town approaches and asks us what we are doing. My father says "we're sending a message to Osama Bin Laden". He just laughs. Being far away from the major urban centres makes it easy to joke about things like this. |
