THE ABANDONWARE PROJECTS

Abondonware is the perfect analogy for temporary architectural installations. The architectural definition would defer from the original software context to make it deliberate; "Something which is build -in order- to be left behind as public domain." The main questions in these projects are;

- Could such a thing be practically used by its accidental users?
- Reversed; what would constitute an accidental practical function?
- As these things could be produced and placed within a short timeframe, could they be used to transfer meaning in a dialogue with events?
- Could they be purposefully build simulacra of contemporary context, in order to disagree, or comment unpopular views? (Be un-comforting by nature?)
- Can they be illegal, or are they already when build and placed in public space? Then can they be claimed by their maker?

Reference #1
A common definition of the simulacrum is a copy of a copy whose relation to the model has become so attenuated that it can no longer properly be said to be a copy. It stands on its own as a copy without a model.
Someone, in an article, takes a similar definition as his starting point, but emphasizes its inadequacy. For beyond a certain point, the distinction is no longer one of degree. The simulacrum is less a copy twice removed than a phenomenon of a different nature altogether: it undermines the very distinction between copy and model.10 The terms copy and model bind us to the world of representation and objective (re)production. A copy, no matter how many times removed, authentic or fake, is defined by the presence or absence of internal, essential relations of resemblance to a model. The simulacrum, on the other hand, bears only an external and deceptive resemblance to a putative model. The process of its production, its inner dynamism, is entirely different from that of its supposed model; its resemblance to it is merely a surface effect, an illusion.11

" It is not the form one should consider and criticise, but the methods of cultural organisation."

Hanspeter Machne.

selected PROJECTS :

-- Theebar 4.a.m. [INSTALLATION]
temporary architecture project for the artmanifestation SWOP-A. Arnhem. 07 | 2002
The teabar 4.a.m. revolved around a sound and video recording of the morning street outside the vacant store in which 4.a.m. was build. Each day, visitors could watch the nightly activities and sunrise of that particular day, while sipping tea. The project was part of SWOP-A; an art-project for temporary art in the public spaces of Arnhem.

-- O.B.S.'02 [INSTALLATION / PERFORMANCE]
together with Melle Smets for 'Parking Den Haag' STROOM
CBK
< at the Megastores. Rotterdam. 06 | 2002
The ad hoc "Organisatie voor Binnenstedelijke Sprintkampioenschappen" (Organisation for Innercity Sprintingchampionships) 'broadcasted' a local Radio-show inside the shoppingmall "Megastores" in Den Haag. Exactly simulating the sounds of Dutch National Sunday Sports Journal, a sprint-competition was 'staged' between the Megastores and their largest commercial competitor "Villa Arena"; running through the shopping mall as an obstacle course.

-- Noodloopeigenschappen [PROJECTION INSTALLATION]
for the artmanifestation ZUMMER, G.A.N.G < Arnhem. 08 | 2000
The installation consisted of a projection of a gentleman's toilet in the public space of Arnhem, hereby stimulating the particular use of that spot.

-- Quotewars [PROJECTION INSTALLATION and DATABASE]
for the exhibition YMMV < Groningen. 11 | 1999
The 'Quotewars' installation consisted mainly of a database containing texts about architecture, art, new media and fringe culture. During the brief period of the exposition, the database was accessible through a website with a 'chatterbot' interface. The users were encouraged to chat with the data, and in this way find their way to the information they wanted to know. While the system was online, different 'chatterbots' used the data in the database, and the data from conversations with users of the website, to trade information with each other in the format of a conversation. Data was added and relations between the data were changed as new sentences were formulated by the system and suggested by the users. On location in the city center of Groningen, at the School of Architecture, the conversations from within the system were projected as sentences and, spoken by computers, played as sound on the streets. Hereby not only making the contents of the database more public, but also publicizing the way in which the database was used; what questions were asked, and what opinions were formulated. Each night, after a day of use, the system started to 'discuss' the data, incorporating the new with the old, changing formulations and suggesting new relations.
